Job Description:
This position in the Jon M Huntsman School of Business advises
Chinese students in matters such as prerequisites, registration,
general education, major and minor requirements, campus transfer
process, articulation of transfer credit and finding appropriate
mentors with emphasis on helping those students understand and
overcome differences between American and Chinese cultures and
educational systems. This position is responsible for maintaining
student data. Including tracking students' academic records and
monitoring progress. Position may require travel to China on an
as-needed basis to visit students.
+ Assist partner offices and students in China to successfully
complete the required academic program.
+ Assist students and partner offices with tracking and providing
accurate and up-to-date academic information.
+ Maintain, track, and update student academic progress, and
communicate this information to the partner locations in an
accurate and timely manner.
+ Provide team support to the China Programs office and to partner
offices.
+ Provide current course and major requirement information to
students, other advisors, and to the partner offices in China.
+ Interface with the Intensive English Language Institute office,
the Office of Global Engagement, the Registrars office, and
University Advising in matters regarding students.
+ Assist students in the transferring process from partner
locations to the Logan campus.
+ Assist the advising staff with on-campus Chinese students when
requested (i.e., translation, questions, and other general
information).
+ Coordinate, review, submit, and/or issue graduation applications
and academic action documents in an accurate and timely manner.
+ Assist in developing and managing the Summer Program,
administrative visits, and other activities including local
transportation of visitors and students.
+ Travel to China Programs partner locations as needed.
+ Participate in assessment activities and implement
recommendations.
+ Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
+ A bachelors degree is required.
+ Speak and translate Mandarin Chinese in emails, meetings,
conversations, and documents.
+ Fluency in written and oral English and Mandarin.
+ Travel to China as needed.
+ Ability to manage many tasks at the same time.
+ Must be eligible to work in the United States.
+ Must have or be able to obtain a valid passport and Chinese visa
within 90 days.
+ Must have or be able to obtain a valid Utah drivers license
within 90 days.
+ Proficiency in basic computer programs (MS Word, Excel,
PowerPoint)
+ Demonstrated ability to be sensitive to and understand the needs
of a diverse student population while maintaining a high degree of
confidentiality and discretion.
Preferred Qualifications:
+ Knowledge of both American and Chinese higher education systems
and culture.
+ Knowledge of University course schedules, course curriculum and
degree requirements.
+ Knowledge of University IT systems including DegreeWorks, SSB,
INB, and other programs.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
+ Ability to understand and act consistently with USU's mission,
strategic directions, and commitment to students.
+ Knowledge of student advising and graduation requirements
specific to academic majors, departments, USU, and to the unique
needs of China Programs students.
+ Be creative in identifying, assessing, and developing improved
methods of advising, or resolving student advising issues.
+ Assist individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds through
effective interpersonal and communication skills, including
communication such as phone, email, and digital communication
+ Work collaboratively in a team environment respectful of a
diverse set of stakeholders.
+ Ability to leverage available information to develop effective
solutions.
+ Maintain student information confidentiality and abide by all
FERPA laws.
+ Retain professionalism even in high stress situations.
+ Work effectively under pressure and meet deadlines.
+ Effective oral, written, and interpersonal communication
skills.
+ Ability to work with minimal supervision.
