The structural engineering group at Utah State enjoys significant collaboration and shared interests in several research areas. These include transportation engineering, earthquake engineering, non-destructive testing and evaluation, and experimental studies both in the laboratory and in the field. The successful applicant will contribute significantly to both the research and teaching efforts within the department and across the broader university community. It is expected that this position will be filled at the Assistant Professor level; however outstanding candidates will be considered at other levels. This is an academic-year (9-month) appointment with an anticipated start date of August 1st, 2020. The successful applicant will also be expected to be an effective teacher at both the undergraduate and the graduate levels. The ideal candidate must demonstrate a strong record of externally-funded research, peer-reviewed publications, teaching competency, and professional leadership. Qualifications Required Qualifications: Earned doctorate in Civil Engineering or a closely related field with an emphasis on structural engineering. BS from a civil engineering program or a closely related field. Ability to conduct and disseminate research in the area of structural engineering. Ability to obtain sponsored research to support scholarly activities. Ability to teach undergraduate and graduate courses in areas of expertise. Ability to provide institutional and industry service. Strong interpersonal and communication skills. Preferred Qualifications: Candidates with expertise in one or more of the following areas are particularly encouraged to apply: analytical structural modeling, non-destructive evaluation, soil structure interaction, earthquake engineering, bridge engineering, experimental structural analysis, or civil engineering materials analysis. Professional registration and academic or practical experience are also desirable. The successful candidate's expertise is expected to be complementary to the research and teaching activities of the geotechnical engineering faculty in the CEE Department. In addition, the successful candidate will have the ability to perform interdisciplinary research with other research groups including those within USU's CEE Department (Transportation, Structural, Hydraulic Structures, Environmental, Irrigation, and Water Resources). As we strive to hire the best candidate, we will consider candidates with any research interest. However, we have identified the following research and teaching topics as areas for potential collaboration in the CEE Department: deep foundations, soil-structure interaction, surface erosion and local scour. Candidates are expected to build an active externally funded research program, provide effective teaching and mentoring at both the undergraduate and graduate levels and provide service within the University and their respective national and international professional communities. Qualifications Required Qualifications - Earned doctorate in Civil Engineering with emphasis in Geotechnical Engineering or a closely related field, - Demonstrated ability to conduct geotechnical engineering research and disseminate findings in appropriate outlets (high-quality, peer-reviewed journals and technical conferences), - Effective interpersonal, communication, and teaching skills, - Ability to write grant proposals to support scholarly activities, - Ability to attract high quality graduate research students. Preferred Qualifications - Ability to teach fundamental undergraduate soil mechanics and geotechnical design courses, - Ability to teach fundamental engineering and/or engineering mechanics courses, - Ability to teach advanced graduate courses in geotechnical engineering, - Ability and desire to collaborate with a diverse multidisciplinary team of colleagues, - Professional engineering licensure or the ability to obtain such.
