Job Title: Lead Vehicle Maintenance TechnicianReports To: Vehicle Maintenance SupervisorFLSA: Hourly/Non-Exempt (Class II) - Full TimeHours: Varies Mon through Sat, and on-call as neededNature and Scope of PositionThe Lead Maintenance Technician's primary function is to assist the Vehicle Maintenance Supervisor in coordinating and providing general upkeep and preventative maintenance of the transit vehicle fleet. The Lead Technician also evaluates and maintains the parts inventory and manages vendor accounts and contracts. The Lead Technician is responsible for ensuring safe, reliable, and efficient public transit vehicles are available for daily operations.Duties and ResponsibilitiesThe following is not intended to be a comprehensive list of the duties and responsibilities of the Lead Technician position, but rather a general description of some of essential functions of this position.

  • Maintain effective internal and external customer service in the maintenance environment
  • Participate in departmental budget development and administration
  • Participate in and maintain accurate reporting, conduct inventory audits and departmental service reviews
  • Ensure preventive maintenance and repairs meet all quality and safety standards
  • Develop and process departmental procurements according to policies and procedures
  • Warranty management
  • Facilitate parts and maintenance vendor accounts and contract management
  • Maintain and control inventory of replacement parts, tools, and equipment required for operations
  • Provide training for new maintenance employees according to organizational requirements and guidelines. Maintain accurate training records for employees
  • Properly diagnose problems and perform required repairs in a safe, timely, cost-effective manner
  • Perform scheduled preventative maintenance inspections and repairs as required
  • Perform specific vehicle maintenance, diagnosis and repairs, including test drives
  • Remove, install, repair, disassemble and assemble parts related to all mechanical and electrical systems on District buses and support vehicles
  • Safely operate all tools and machinery required to perform work duties
  • Ensure completeness and accuracy of reports and daily paperwork
  • Recommend and comply with company safety and operational policies and procedures
  • Acts as the primary back-up for service writing, shop scheduling, technician oversight, timecard verification and paid-leave approvals, Service Worker oversight, and coordination with Facilities Technician
  • Other duties as assignedRelationshipsThe Lead Technician is directly supervised by the Vehicle Maintenance Supervisor and also must also be able to work with drivers, dispatchers, service workers, parts personnel and outside vendors.Working ConditionsShop Environment - This position will be subject to occasional heavy lifting, bending, stooping, standing, high noise levels and vehicle fumes.     Requirements:
    Knowledge/Experience
    • High School Diploma or equivalent
    • Class B CDL
    • Knowledge of DOT rules and regulations
    • Training in diesel and automotive engine repair
    • Training in diagnostics of vehicle systems
    • Minimum 2 years of experience as an individual contributor in performing maintenance and repairs on diesel and automotive systems
    • Experience with computer diagnostic software, preferred
    • ASE Master, Transit Bus or Medium/Heavy Truck Certifications, preferredSkills/AbilitiesThe Lead Technician should have the following skills/abilities, among others:
      • Communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing, in the English language
      • Demonstrate an understanding of effective customer service
      • Demonstrate regular and consistent attendance and punctuality
      • Wear the proper uniform and personal protection equipment as determined by the District
      • Manage multiple projects
      • Possess sound judgment and decision making skills
      • Assimilate information quickly and accurately
      • Prioritize tasks and manage time effectively
      • Possess ability to work independently
      • Travel as needed to conduct District business
