Job Description:

The Department of Animal, Dairy and Veterinary Sciences at Utah State University invites applications for a 9-month academic year, non-tenure track appointment as an Equine Lecturer. Beginning August 1, 2021. The role assignment for this position is 95% teaching and 5% service.

As a faculty member at USU, the successful candidate will be responsible for teaching western discipline courses such as weanling behavior and handling, yearling fitting and sales preparation, equine evaluation and judging, western riding fundamentals beginning through advanced, special topics and other courses (based on their expertise) at the modern USU Sam Skaggs Family Equine Education Center that includes an indoor riding arena (150’ x 300’), an outdoor riding arena (150’ x 300’), two breeding/foaling barns, two stall barns for show horse/yearling preparation: a basic 19 horse barn and a new temperature controlled 50 stall barn with two wash bays, three tack rooms and multiple tie areas and a classroom building furnished with state of the art technology that opened in 2015.

The successful candidate will serve as the Coach of the USU Western Equestrian Team, Manager of the annual horse auction and Coordinator of the Equine Internship Program. In addition to working with and mentoring students in all aspects of equine management; other responsibilities will include assisting the Equine Center Manager with horse and facility care, working collaboratively with the Breeding Program, preparing and marketing colts for sale and having the flexibility to work after hours and/or to travel for shows as needed. The USU Equine Science and Management curriculum offers courses in equine health, equine breeding, colt starting, equine business management, equine assisted therapy, horsemanship and other specialized areas of advanced training. The USU equine program maintains almost 100 horses for instructional purposes for approximately 240 students across all years of the curriculum. Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Animal Science, Equine Science or relevant field.
  • Five years professional industry experience in western performance horses with an emphasis in the reined cow horse discipline.
  • Experience teaching foundation through advanced skills in the western discipline to beginning level riders.
  • Proven ability to handle and halter break weanlings and yearlings.
  • Proven ability to start colts under saddle.
  • Proven ability to train and show western performance horse with an emphasis on the Reined Cow Horse.
  • Successful as a competitor in western performance horse disciplines including Reined Cow Horse.
  • Proven ability to prepare, market and purchase high quality horses.
  • Fluent in current, successful, western performance horse bloodlines with an emphasis on cutting and cow horse bloodlines.
  • Experience handling stallions and with the reproductive management of mares and stallions.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with volunteers, students, donors, community members, co-workers and administration.
  • Willingness to work on holidays and/or weekends and to travel as needed.
  • Competent in Microsoft Office or similar program.
  • Comfortable working in all weather conditions.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • MS degree in Equine Science, Animal Science or relevant field.
  • University or curriculum development experience.
  • Event planning experience.
  • Current judges’ card in one or more of the following organizations; AQHA, APHA, NRCHA, NCHA, NRHA, NSBA.
  • Experience competing in the National Reined Cow Horse Association (NRCHA), and/or National Cutting Horse Association (NCHA) at the National level in open division classes.
  • Coaching of youth, amateur, and non-pro competitors to regional and national recognition in the previously listed organizations.
  • Demonstrated ability to start and manage a successful western performance horse training business.

This position requires considerable physical activity. Employees must have sufficient strength to perform the duties and responsibilities of the position including standing for 6 hours and heavy lifting (up to 75 lbs.) and/or pushing and pulling of heavy objects. Employees must be prepared to assume uncomfortable positions, such as crawling, kneeling, and squatting. Employees work outside and will not be protected from weather conditions, including extreme cold and extreme heat for extended periods.
