Job Description:

We seek an energetic, collaborative team player skilled in operating, maintaining, and managing biological engineering laboratory equipment and instrumentation to facilitate the department’s goals.

Reporting Responsibilities:

The Biological Engineering Technical Instrument Lead reports to the Biological Engineering Department Head.

Typical Functions:

1. Specify, procure, install, test, and maintain biological laboratory equipment and instruments

2. Repair, recalibrate, validate, upgrade, and replace instruments as necessary

3. Plan, record, manage and assess utilization of equipment and instruments by users

4. Train and supervise users to properly use equipment and instruments

5. Maintain databases for equipment location, use, warranties, maintenance, and inventories

6. Conduct laboratory analyses and report results ways that assure statistically valid results

7. Prepare reports, program documents, standard operating procedures, and methods descriptions

8. Connect instruments with computers, servers, applications, and online databases

9. Perform miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications:

One year of experience in a related field is required.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

1. Ability to think strategically, analyze complex situations, and resolve problems

2. Experience using relevant biological laboratory equipment, instruments and methods

3. Ability to install, configure, and maintain biological engineering instruments and peripherals

4. Knowledge of electronics (e.g., microcontrollers, Raspberry PI) and relevant software (e.g., LabVIEW, Python)

5. Ability to read diagrams, schematics and technical manuals for diagnostic information

6. Ability to maintain confidentiality of records and information

7. Ability to balance and prioritize and advance multiple simultaneous workflows

8. Skilled at responding professionally, effectively, and efficiently to customer service requests

9. Ability to maintain a budget and track expenditures and transactions

10. Strong oral and written communication skills

Work Environment and Physical Requirements:

Employees primarily work indoors and are protected from weather and/or contaminants, but not, necessarily, occasional temperature changes. Employees are frequently required to sit, stand, walk, bend, stoop, use hands and fingers, and reach with hands and arms. Employees must be able to lift and move up to 50 pounds and retrieve and transport equipment ands instruments.
