The Space Dynamics Laboratory (SDL) has been developing innovative technologies and solutions for cutting-edge DoD and intelligence programs for over six decades. Our expertise is in space and airborne IR, VIS, UV, and RF sensors, small satellite technologies, test and calibration, cybersecurity, data visualization and assurance, and ground stations.

SDL is seeking candidates for a Ground Software Systems Engineer to work directly with program management, engineers (primarily software), mission operators, technical writers and DoD customers to develop technical system design/architectures and ensure successful program execution. The selected candidate will lead efforts to design, review, and implement mission-critical satellite ground software systems, research and build cutting-edge new capabilities, and look for ways to continually improve our engineering processes and software deliveries.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Work with program management, engineering leads, customers, and other stakeholders to fully understand and coordinate program requirements, constraints, scheduling, and mission CONOPS
  • Help to develop engineering schedules and coordinate with program managers and internal/external team members to ensure that all technical program deliveries and milestones are met
  • Design/review software architectures of applications within distributed computing networks, data networks, network simulation, and tactical networks
  • Create and revise technical documentation, including structural and behavioral diagrams, charts, and any other means necessary to ensure that systems are properly communicated and documented for all stakeholders
  • Support engineering design reviews and conferences by creating technical presentations and presenting technical solutions to meet program requirements
  • Track system requirements, working with software engineers and testers to ensure they are successfully implemented
  • Suggest and implement new engineering practices and techniques to help SDL develop/maintain better processes and technology solutions
  • Help to mentor and train engineers
  • Minimal travel to support technical meetings, test support activities, and system demonstrations

Required Qualifications:

  • BS or higher in computer science, computer engineering, electrical engineering, physics, mathematics, or a related discipline
  • 5+ years of related experience
  • Working knowledge in each of the following areas:

o Software design and architecture

o Distributed system design and interoperability

o Algorithm development and implementation

o Sensor data fusion

o Data processing

o Data visualization

o Graphical user interfaces

o Image and signal processing

o Remote sensing

o Ground support equipment

o Command and control of spacecraft

o Information assurance and cybersecurity

o Understanding of messaging frameworks and communications protocols

  • Excellent communication skills: written, verbal, diagramming, and presenting
  • Ability to perform engineering trade-offs between customer requirements, schedule deadlines, program funding, and engineering best practices
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment on collaborative efforts involving both internal and external team members
  • Working knowledge of MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Project, Visio, etc.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen and be able to obtain a U.S. Government Security Clearance
  • Must be able to travel

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with satellite programs and satellite communications and subsystems
  • Familiarity with government and commercial radio ground terminal networks, link budgets, RF bands, and regulatory issues surrounding radio frequency usage
  • Experience in software and/or algorithm development
  • Basic understanding of EO/IR sensor operating principles, synthetic scene generation, and system performance assessment techniques
  • Understanding of computer networking, network devices, network protocols, cloud technologies and deployment, AWS, and Linux
  • Experienced in DOD Systems Engineering (communication chain, requirements generation and tracking, integration, testing, data flows, etc.)
  • Experience with Atlassian management tools (JIRA, Confluence, Bitbucket, etc.)
