American Conservation Experience USFS Recreation Technician Summary: American Conservation Experience, a Non-Profit Conservation Corps, in partnership with the United States Forest Service, Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest, is seeking one Recreation Technician. The members will dedicate 20 weeks (100 8hr/days) with the Forest Service. The primary focus of this opportunity is to serve in carrying out a variety of operations and project plans to support the district recreation program. The member will assist to execute specific rules, regulations, methods and procedures to complete a designated assignment or project. The right candidate will have a passion for the outdoors, working with people, backpacking skills/knowledge and comfortable with living in the outdoors. Start Date: May 12th, 2019 End Date: Sept 27th, 2019 Location: Logan, UT Located in northern Utah's Cache Valley, the Logan Ranger District is a great starting point for adventuring outside. The District is home to Mount Naomi and Wellsville Mountain Wilderness Areas, the Logan Canyon Scenic Byway (Highway 89) and the Mount Naomi Peak National Recreation Trail. The District is also a scenic gateway to Bear Lake to the east and Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks to the north. Outdoor enthusiasts can participate in a vast range of activities on the District. In the summer, activities include hiking, camping, rock climbing, mountain biking, horseback riding, canoeing, kayaking, OHV riding as well as long time traditions such as hunting and fishing. The onset of winter doesn't slow down the action. Once the ground is blanked with a thick layer of snow, visitors can snowmobile, cross country ski or snow shoe across the District's infamous powder. Compensation: The member should anticipate serving 40 hours/wk and will receive a living allowance of $450/wk for food and incidentals, dispersed bi-weekly. Upon successful completion of this opportunity, individuals may be eligible to receive an AmeriCorps Education Award valued at $2,255.24. Housing: Members will be required to find their own housing for this position. Position Description: The member will assure recreation sites, areas, and trails are maintained in accordance with operation and maintenance plans. Maintain and adhere to schedules for daily activities, maintenance schedules, inspect cleanup operations based on agency standards and report on public use of sites and areas. The member will inspect recreation area cleanups and maintenance, while communicating and supporting the campground host(s). Inspects concentrated recreation areas and special use permits for compliance with the permit and the management plans, public health, and safety. Performs safety mitigation of public recreation areas and corrective action. The member will patrol the wilderness areas to ensure accordance with Wilderness Management Plan. Assist in cleaning both roadside and backcountry dispersed sites. Naturalize sites where necessary in order to control use and prevent resource damage. Install and maintain information boards, travel signs and regulatory signs. Provide detailed information about recreation opportunities to visitors and explains the Forest Service rules and regulations. The member will collect, compile and summarize information for recreation data management systems. Provide input for programming, planning and monitoring the condition and use of trails. Lastly, the member will perform public outreach to educate visitors about resource regulations. Training Provided: ATV, First Aid/CPR, Defensive Driving, Trail building and Maintenance, Wilderness Solitude Monitoring Project Environment: The member will spend extensive days in the outdoors, fully immersed in the forest environment. The work areas vary from established recreation areas to wilderness. The member must be able to work in varying conditions of temperature and weather. The terrain may be steep, uneven, rocky and covered with thick vegetation. The member is required to uphold all safety standards of the agency. The use of safety equipment is required, boots, gloves, goggles and a hard hat. The member must be physically fit and able to work long days. There may be field days that involve primitive camping and working. Qualifications: Applicants should have a background, education and/or interest in Recreation Management, Environmental Studies, Ecology, Natural Resource Management or a closely related field, with a deep interest in advancing their career goals in recreation, wilderness and natural resource management. Required: * Members must be US citizen or possess a green card * Since this position requires driving, members must be 21+. * Ability and willingness to undergo a federal criminal background check is required * Must have a valid driver's license, clean driving record. * Members must have basic knowledge of forestry with sufficient understanding of standard forest recreation area operations, maintenance and use regulations and procedures. * Members must have knowledge of recreation operation and maintenance plans to schedule daily activities, establish maintenance schedules and inspect cleanup operations. * Members must have basic knowledge of recreation inventory/planning systems to provide input for recreation program management. * Ability to effectively meet and deal with contractors, coworkers, and Forest visitors; and demonstrate recreation principles. * Knowledge of situational awareness and safety. * Knowledge of operation and maintenance of off-road motorized vehicles such as ATV's, watercraft, 4-wheel drives, etc. FS certification required. * Ability to engage with the public and provide information on resource management practices, regulations and current conditions of Forest Service district. * Members must have a high a high fitness level and an interest in camping, with potential for backcountry work trips. * Ability to work alone/in a small group with minimal supervision. * Ability to work in small teams in close/remote settings. * Experience and/or ability to learn use of GPS unit. * Must be able and willing to work outdoors and be capable of lifting 50 lbs. * Must be able to take initiative, work independently, and participate in collaborative efforts. * Must be able to communicate clearly and concisely with resource professionals. Preferred: * 6-12 months previous trail and recreation work experience * S-212, Game of Logging, MTDC Chainsaw or Cross cut saw certification * Current ATV training Certification * Documented leadership skills and training Member must be willing to represent ACE and the Forest Service in a professional, positive, and enthusiastic manner.
